DESERTERS FROM SHIPS (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. It is a serious matter for men to leave their vessels, especially as one had done so in a time of war, said the magistrate, Mr. J. Morling, in the Police Court to-day in sending two deserters to prison for one month. Thomas John I-lockaday, aged 24, an A. 8., pleaded guilty. The police said the accused signed on in London and deserted in Wellington. William Dobson, aged 23. a hairdresser and a New Zealander, admitted deserting at Lyttelton in January of last year. The police said he called at the Newmarket station to-day on another matter, when it was discovered that he was wanted on a warrant on the present: charge. He had recently joined the army, but had been declared medically unfit.
