TOKOMARU BAY NEWS

VOLUNTEERS FAREWELLED TENNIS CLUB FUNCTION (Herald Correspondent.) The tennis courts in Tokomaru Bay were the scene of a ceremony last week-end when tennis players farewelled their secretary, Mr. S. LyleSmythe. who leaves to-morrow for Trentham. After afternoon tea the president, Mr. G. Glen, thanked Mr. LyleSmythe for the work he had done during the five years he had been secretary. He presented the retiring secretary with a leather dressing case from the club as a memento of the years spent in Tokomaru Bay. Mr. G. W. Eivers, a vice-president, endorsed Mr. Glen’s remarks and said that during the two New Year tournaments he assisted Mr. Lyle-Smythe in the organising work. He only hoped that if he had the privilege of helping in the next tournament the secretary would be half as competent as Mr. Lyle-Smythe had been. "If the secretary serves his King and country as well as he has served the tennis club,” concluded Mr. Eivers, “it will most surely be a case of ‘Thy duty well and truly done.’ ” Mr. Lyle-Smythe suitably replied, saying that whatever he had done for the club was done for the game of tennis. He hoped that his successor would be as fortunate as he had been in having the assistance of the whole club. Party For Volunteers Mr. and Mrs. W.
