THOUSANDS DEAD

SOVIET LOSSES HUGE FORCE EMPLOYED INVASION OF FINLAND CASUALTIES MOUNTING THE MANNERHEIM LINE (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press assn.) (Reed. Jan. 8, 3 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 7. The Helsinki correspondent of the Daily Telegraph says it can conservatively be stated that over 50,000 Russians have been killed since November 30, while the casualties from wounds and exposure are much higher. The only sizeable Russian advance was 50 miles down the Petsamo-Rov-aniemi road. Russia employed over 300,000 men in 18 divisions, perhaps nearly 500,000 men, one of every five of whom became a casualty. The Russians managed to hold gains on the shores of Lake Lodoga, but constant, futile hammering against the Mannerheim Line is piling up more and more losses.
