SECOND ECHELON
DRAW ON GISBORNE ANOTHER DRAFT CALLED QUOTA NEARLY TREBLED 5 1 MEN LEAVE NEXT WEEK Despite the fact that Gisborne already has been called upon to provide one-third of the quota required from the No. 7 military area of the Central Command for the Second Echelon of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, the immediate demand upon this district has not been satisfied. An additional 51 men are being called up to fill deficiencies in voluntary enlistments elsewhere, and will follow their 94 comrades who are to proceed to camp this week. When these men proceed to - camp next Tuesday, Gisborne will have about 170 men in the Second Echelon. The quota asked from Gisborne and the East Coast for .the First Echelon was 59 other ranks, with a substantial number of officers and non-commis-sioned officei's. The fact that so many more men are being called up from this district illustrates the difficulty of the Army Department in filling the ranks of the Second Echelon. The position at present is that every fit man between 21 and 36 years, who has not more than two children directly dependent upon him, can count upon immediate admission to the echelon if he enrols within the next week or two. Officers throughout No. 7 military district.have been instructed to expedite the organisation of medical boards, so that every available man may be drawn upon. Less Than a Week's Notice Draft cards calling up additional men are in the mails, and those included in the supplementary draft will receive as little notice as those included in the main contingent of the echelon.
