THEFTS BY RUSE
WOMEN OF GIPSY TYPE HOTELKEEPERS AS VICTIMS Two women, stated to be of the gipsy type and describing themselves as Spanish Australians, appeared in the Nelson Police Court, before Mr. T. E. Maunsell, S.M., charged with the theft of money from hotelkeepers. Georgina Stewart was charged with the theft of ,ClO from Amos Stanley Rowling at Belgrove, while Ellen Stewart was charged with the theft of £2B from Alfred John Banks at K or ere. Detective-Sergeant Hayhurst explained that the women had gone into the hotels of the men concerned and had invited the proprietors to “have their heads read." They demanded a substantial sum of money to hold for luck. In each ease they were handed a roll of notes, in one case £2B beingabstracted and in the other £lO.
The women were each fined £lO on the theft charges, while on charges of being rogues and vagabonds they were convicted and ordered to come til) for sentence if called upon within two months, conditional upon their leaving the country at the first opportunity.
