ONE-MAN TEAM

N.SAV. HURDLER S. G. STENNER ARRIVES COMPETING TO-NIGHT AMATEUR CLUB DRAW Followers of amateur athletics should find exceptional interest in the Gisborne appearance to-night of the New SouJ.h Wales (hurdler. S. G. Stenner, holder of the New South Wales decathlon in 1938, and champion over hurdles at the standard distance of 120yds., his time in 1939 being 14 3-ssec. Stenner is visiting Gisborne under the auspices of the Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, and will make his first actual run in competition here.

On Saturday in Napier he took part in the 100yds. fiat race as a pipe-opener, and he now feels that he has found his land-legs again, after his crossing of the Tasman. He is to compete in the 120yds. hurdles this evening at the Childers Road Reserve, and also will give an exhibition run over either 300yds. or 440yds. with G I. Bickerstnlf, Hastings, champion all-rounder l'or the centre district and an outstanding New Zealand competitor. H.8.-P.B. Centre Enterprise The importation of the New South Wales hurdler was arranged by the Hawke's Bay-Poverty Bay centre management committee, with a view to | stimulating interest in amateur athletics. and there can be no doubt that the description of “one-man team” applies very closely to the visitor. Apart from his New South Wales title for the 120yds. hurdles, Stenner holds several other distinctions, and in 1938 he ran third to Lavery, South Africa, and O’Connor, Canada, in the Empire Games > race over hurdles at the standard distance. That was the event in which Lavery broke the standing record, and about a yard covered the first three men. In the same season, Stenner won the New South Wales decathlon, finishing at the head of the 100yds. metres and 400yds. metres field on the fiat, winning the 110 metres hurdles, the broad jump and the shot put, and finishing second in the high jump and javelin throw. In the pole vault, he was third to Winter and Cartwright, Australia’s tow leading vaulters. Prepossessing Personality The visitor is 28 years of age, was born in New South Wales, and is a member of the Mounted Rifles. To date, lie has competed only in his home State, and his tour of New Zealand centres represents his first overseas effort. A man of decidedly prepossessing appearance and personality, he should leave his mark on the sport in Gisborne, and those who see his performance to-night will follow with exceptional interest his later appearances in the Dominion. On Thursday night in Napier, he will compete with Frank Sharpley, New Zealand champion, and Bradwell, Canterbury champion, over 120 yds hurdles. This contest will have an additional interest in view of the fact that it will be Sharpley’s last appearance for a time, as ho proceeds to camp on Friday morning, to join the Anti-Tank Company at Trentham. Slenner’s later appearance will include meetings in Hastings on Saturday, Waipukurau on Tuesday. January 16, and Naples- again on Wednesday, January 17. In addition, lie will compete in Christchurch and Wellington. An added attraction at to-night's (meeting in Gisborne will be the Ne" Zealand high jump champion. E Phillips, who is to appear in competition with the runner-up, L. Grey, Gisborne, who is also the Hawke's Bay-Poverty Bay champion.
