WELLINGTON, this day The New Zealand bowling championships Centennial tournament opened this morning in warm weather, with approximately 800 players competing in the singles, pairs, and rinks—a record entry for Wellington. The singles attracted 288 entries, the pairs 266, and the rinks 172. Play began this morning on 18 greens for the singles championship,, which is held by W. C. Franks, of the Balmoral Club, Auckland, who is not defending his title this year. Another notable absentee is Professor j Maxwell Walker, who won the event three times.
