WAR SUPPLY BOARD EMPIRE AIR SCHEME EQUIPPING AERODROMES SUPPLY OF PLANES (lilec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Jan, 8, 1.50 p.m.) OTTAWA, Jan. 7. The Canadian Minister of Transport, Mr. C. D. Howe, broadcasting, revealed that the War Supply Board had spent £16,250,000, exclusive of £O,*•230,000 for railway equipment, and was spending £1,000,000 weekly on a rising scale. He added that 40 aerodromes were ready for the Empire scheme. Survey parties were mapping 40 more and development would start as soon as weather permitted. He said it was estimated that over 4000 planes would be required and 1282 were being manufactured in Canada, except for the engines. Eight hundred and seventy English-built planes would be assembled in Canada while 593 were being manufactured in the United States. In addition 1622 planes without wings had been ordered from England, the wings to be manufactured in Canada and the machines assembled there. Deliveries from abroad would commence on May 17. The sum of £250,000 was being spent on building 72 boats, from powered 18-I'ooters to steel, ships of British whale catcher design for delivery both to the Canadian and tiie British Governments.
