RUSSIANS DIG IN

HELD BY FINNS THE MANNERHEIM LINE LADAGER-AREA REVERSE REPLY TO AIR RAIDS LONDON, Jan. 5. The Russians are entrenching and erecting barbed wire entanglements opposite the centre of the Mannerheim Line, signifying at least a temporary abandonment of their hopes of a successful offensive in this sector, and also possibly fears of a Finnish advance towards Leningrad, says a message from Helsinki.

An official Finnish communique states that two Russian companies north-east from Lake Ladoga attacked, but were repulsed with a loss of 150 killed. A total of 250 were killed at Suomussalmi. The fighting continues on the other front.

Nine Soviet air raiders dropped 22 bombs on Voikka, near Kuovola, killing two civilians. Air raiders also attacked other populous centres, causing only small damage.

The Finnish Air Force yesterday raided the Russian Arctic port of Murmansk, setting fire to a big petrol dump. They attacked many raily/ay stations, goods yards, road junctions and bridges behind the Russian lines. Fierce fighting has broken out in the Lake Kuola area in North Finland, where the Finns are reported to be forcing back the Russians, in spite of air raids on the Finns’ communications, including the railway to Sweden.
