BRITISH TRIBUTES
GERMAN SEAMANSHIP FIGHT BY GRAF SPEE (Reed. Jan. 4, 3 p.m.) NEW YORK, Jan. 3. Messages from Montevideo state that Admiral Harwood and other officers of H.M.S. Ajax commended the handling of the Graf von Spec by Captain Langsdorff and the seamanship of the German sailors. Most of the British officers agreed that the pocket battleship was an effective fighting unit, but not as dangerous as had been expected. The Ajax bore evidence of hits by the Graf von Spee’s guns. One shell completely demolished Admiral Harwood’s cabin and his personal belongings. Admiral Harwood was dressed in borrowed clothes when he went ashore.
A denial is given to the suggestion that nine Allied warships were in the Plata when the Graf von Spee departed from Montevideo. It is explained that only H.M.S. Cumberland had joined the Achilles and the Ajax. ELEVEN SHIPS LOST SWEDISH MERCHANTMEN MINES AND TORPEDOES (Reed. Jan. 4, 2.50 p.m.) STOCKHOLM, Jan. 3. The Swedish Ministry of Marine announced that Sweden had lost 11 ships aggregating 17,254 tons during Decembe/. either through striking mines or being torpedoed.
