GISBORNE BUILDING LAST YEAR’S FIGURES MOST FOR THREE YEARS DECLINE IN OTHER WORK Despite the continued construction i of State houses, permits for an in- ! creased number of private dwellings I were issued by the Gisborne Borough ! Council during the past year, I The total number of permits granted ! for dwellings was 41, an increase of ! nine on the 1938 figures, and the ex- | penditure increased by about £7500, to I £36,455, the highest figure since 1936. I when 48 houses were sanctioned at an ' estimated cost of £36,848. Apart from i 1938, the estimated outlay was the largest since 1930. when permits were issued for 44 houses valued at £39.251. Other building work, however, showed a decline on the council’s building figures. More permits were 1 issued, the total being 215. compared j with 175 in 1938, but there was a considerable decline in the value of the ! work put in hand. The year 1938 was a record one in regard to the estimated cost of work sanctioned, the figure reaching £146,445, and last year’s £95,550 appears small in comparison, but it is well above the average of the past 12 ; years. The 1938 total included the j intermediate school at a cost of about I £40,000, and the granting of the permit for this in December assisted materially in swelling the total in the last few days of the year. Practically all of the work was done during the : past 12 months. ! Last year’s cost of works, apart from | that of 1938, was the largest for the I borough since 1929, when the - total | value reached £106,566.
