CROWD ABOUT TOWN

TO-DAY’S ACTIVITIES POST-HOLIDAY BUYING Many people were surprised this morning at seeing such large shopping crowds about the streets of Gisborne. It was not merely a parade of the shops, for a fair amount of buying was being done. Usually after the holidays, business is slack, but shopkeepers this morning found that they were kept going briskly almost from the outset, and a good average day's business was reported up to the middle of the afternoon.

The reason for the activity was thought to be the long spell between the closing of the shops on Saturday and their re-opening to-day, while the return of a large number of people from their holidays required the restocking of larders and the addition of many other things in households.
