DAMAGE BY FIRE
SAN LORENZO CHURCH APOSTOLIC TREASURES (Reed. Jan. 3, 9 a.m.) ROME, Jan. 1. Fire broke out shortly before midnight in the Apostolic Chancellery and the famous adjacent church of San Lorenzo. The fire brigade was hampered by the bitterly cold weather and did not succeed in quelling the blaze till 5 a.m. The cupola of the chancellery crashed and most of one wing of the church was destroyed. Priceless tapestries and some frescoes at the chancellery are reported to have been completely ruined, but a number of art treasures were saved.
