FATE OF THE TACOMA
BEACH OR DOCK INTERNMENT OF CREW (Reed. Jan. 3, 9 a.m.) NEW YORK, Jan. 1. Messages from Montevideo confirm the earlier reports that the German supply ship Tacoma has been interned for the duration of the war. The Montevideo correspondent of the New York Times says that it is expected in Montevideo that the Tacoma will be beached inside the harbour on Wednesday after arrangements for the crew’s internment have been completed.
The Montevideo correspondent of the Associated Press of America reports, however, that the Uruguayan Foreign Minister, Dr. Guam, stated that the Tacoma would be dockea within the next two days, “pending a decision as to h"r ultimate destination.”
The internment of the crew * was ordered despite the receipt of a further German note maintaining that the Tacoma was a merchant ship and not a naval auxiliary and that the assistance she gave to the “pocket” battleship Graf von Spec was merely humanitarian. When the note was presented, the Tacoma was flying the war flag reserved for warships and naval auxiliaries.
