BIRTHS AND MARRIAGES WAIROA VITAL STATISTICS FIGURES FOR 1939 (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA. litis day. The jyear 1939 saw the Wa'iroa record for both births and marriages shattered, while the number of deaths was lower than has been recorded for some time. The vital statistics for 1939 show the total number of births to be 219, which is considerably greater than those recorded in any previous year, the previous best totals being 175 in 1938, 170 in 1937, 150 in 1935. and 147 in 1936. Included in last year’s total were 01 Maori births, compared with 42 for the previous year and 51 in both 1936 and 1937. Altogether 65 marriage notices were issued by the registrar. Mr. H. G. Jamieson, iast year, as against 56 in 1938. the previous best total being 45 m 1930. In both June and September. 1938. e>sht marriaee notices were issued in Wairoa, which is only two below the monthly record established in September. 1938. Marriages performed by the registrar last year numbered 10. as against six in 1938. the record being 14 in 1936. There were 64 deaths registered in 1939 and this is the lowest since 1936. when the total was 57. The year 1938 saw a record number of deaths of 116, but even taking into account the fact that the 21 people who lost their lives in the Kopuawhara disaster were included in this, last year’s total still would have been a record. In 1937 the total was 68 and in 1935 it reached 79. The 1939 total was made up of 45 Europeans and 19 Maoris, compared with 72 Europeans and 44 Maoris in 1938.
