CARRIERS’ CHARGES

HAWKE'S BAY INCREASE DEPARTMENT’S ORDER NO P.B. INSTRUCTION A report from Hawke's Bay indicates that instructions have been received by carriers in that district from the Transport Department instructing them to raise freight charges for road transport by 3 1-3 per cent. This advance is equivalent to Sd in the £ on the previouslyruling scale, and will apply to all classes of goods, including livestock. It was to become operative from January 1, the report added. '

Inquiries made in Gisborne to-day yielded no positive information regarding the application of a similar advance in the district scale of road transport charges. Carriers stated that they had not received advice of any proposed increase in the scale, though their claims for an increase were at least as good as those put before the department by the car-riers-in Hawke’s-Bay. • • ~ •
