THE WEATHER
Last Night’s Forecast General Situation: A series of deep westerly depressions continues to cross the South Island and conditions are rather disturbed also to the north of the Dominion. Forecast: Winds south-westerly at times in the far north and south, but otherwise north-westerly to westerly prevailing, moderate north of the Waikato but elsewhere strong and squally and reaching gale force at times in many places. Seas: In New Zealand waters, very rough at times south of Cape Egmont and about Cook and Foveaux Straits, rough offshore south of Castlenoint, elsewhere slight to moderate. Eastern Tasman Sea: Winds between north-west and south-west moderate in the northern portion with slight to moderate seas, strong to gale force in the southern portion with very rough seas. Weather: Unsettled in and west of the ranges in the South Island with frequent showers and occasional thunder•dorms, showers extending at times as far north as Taranaki and to the eastern areas of Otago and Southland. elsewhere mainly fair to fine. Temperatures: Cool in the south, mild elsewhere. To-Day’s North Island Report The barometric pressure at all stations along the East Coast this morning showed little variation from the readings taken at S) a.in. yesterday. Gisborne and Napier were the warmest centres this morning, with thermometer readings of 04 degrees. Other temperatures were: Capo Pnlliser, fill; Cape Maria Van Dieman, Tiritiri and Tauranga, 02; Auckland, Cl. Opotiki. fit); and Wellington, 58. North-wester-ly winds predominated, but the force of the wind at most places had dropped considerably overnight. The sea was still rough at Cape Pallliser, but elsewhere smooth to moderate. Light showers fell at many places yesterday. l Midday Forecast General Situation.—The last of the recent series of deep westerly depressions is approaching southern New Zealand. A disturbance is forming in the North Tasman. Forecast. —Moderate to fresh northwesterly winds, with a change to southerly probable to-morrow night. Weather fair and warm. Sea slight.
