TWO-UP PLAYED
FOUR MEN CAUGHT FINES IMPOSED Four men found playing two-up and using obscene language last night appeared this morning before Messrs. J. H. Ormond and J. E. Benson, ,J.Ps„ in the Police Court and were each fined £4. The accused, Keith William Allen, aged 24, a ,labourer, Noel Tasman Hyde, aged 33, a labourer, Edward Kennedy, aged 3(5, a carpenter, and James Smith, aged 23, a labourer, all pleaded guilty and were fined £2 each on charges of playing a game of chance ancl a similar amount for using obscene language. Mr. E. T. Brosnahan appeared for the accused.
Senior-Sergeant J. F. H. Macnamara said the offences were particularly bad because of the locality the men chose, in the vicinity of St. Mary's Church. The use of bad language was freauent and the men were disturbing the neighbourhood. All except Allen had previous convictions against them. In appealing for leniency, Mr. Brosnahan said that the men were charged with the use of only one particular Word. With the exception of one of
the men, there was nothing of a serious character in the list of convictions. The offences, said counsel, took place at the bottom end of Lowe street, which showed that the men had made an attempt to get clear, of all other people. They were playing two-up among themselves and no attempt was made to form a “school ’’
