“TIE-UP” MAN GAOLED
BOY ROPED TO POST
TERM OF TWO MONTHS (Pur Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Known to children of the vicinity as the “tic-up” man, Ernest John Coveny, aged 30, a married man. living with his wife, came before the magistrate to-day, charged with assaulting a boy of 10 at Hataita>
Tiie police statement was to the effect that tire man had a kink on 'literature and notias which .were left about for children to pick up. indicated some extraordinary abnormality. All the notes referred to “tieing up.”
The incident on which he was charged was a case in which it was stated that the accused, when stand* ing by the gate of his residence, handed a piece of rope to a girl and requested her to tie a boy up after she herself refused to be tied. The accused then tied die boy to a post and, with some difficulty, the boy was able to extricate himself. The Magistrate, Mr. J. L. Stout, remarked that it was a curious sort of case, but he could not dismiss it as trivial or treat it in any way but seriously. I-Ie imposed a sentence of two months - hard labour.
