DRAGGED TO DEATH

MILITARY RECRUIT SLIPPED UNDER TRAIN (P«r Press Association.) TIMARU, this day. Slipping as he attempted to board the Fairlic train, after it had left the Timaru station yesterday afternoon. Robert Sinclair Smith, a painter, of Waimate, was caught, under the guard’s van and dragged to his death. The accident occurred about 200yds. north of the station. Mr. Smith, an acting lance-corporal in the Canterbury Mounted unit, was on his way to camp at Cave. With a companion he ran down Strathalian street as the train pulled over the crossing at the foot of the street and chased the train.

Mr. Smith, a married man of about 35 years of age, is understood to have four children. He eniistecl in the Special Force on Wednesday.
