SINGLE-BED WARDS EXTRA FEE NOT ALLOWED NEW GAS HOLDER (Hurultl Corruspomlunt.) The October meeting of the Waiapu Hospital Board was held in Te Puia on Monday, Mr. W. F. Metcalfe being elected lo the chair in the absence of Mr. A. J. 11. Kirkham. Other members present were Messrs. M. Hyland, W. H. O. Johnston. V. G. 11. Rickard, C. McCracken, H. Williams, and C. R. E. Wood. Leave ot absence was granted to Messrs. Kirkham and A. B. Williams.
Advice of the Minister of Health's approval of the expenditure of £125 on the erection of a new gas-holder was received. The secretary, Mr. J. Todd, reported that this had been completed and was working satisfactorily.
Arrangements were completed whereby the Cook Hospital Board would contribute £SO per annum to the department towards the cost of the Tokomaru Bay nurse. In view of the fact that the nurse covers part of the Cook board's district, the Waiapu board’s contribution is reduced by the same amount. A suggestion that the Social Security Act be amended to allow the charging of. an extra fee for single bed wards such as are provided at Tc Puia Hospital did not find favour with the Health Department. Notice of motion lo rescind a previous motion regarding this was given by Mr. C. McCracken. The accounts for the year ended March 3t, 1939, were passed by the Auditor-General without comment. A letter from the telegraph engineer, Gisborne, reporting the action required to prevent radio interference from motors at the hospital was received. It was decided that the necessary suppressors should be purchased.
A donation of £5 from the secretary of the Ruatoriq Rodeo Culb was received, for which the club is fo be thanked. A further sum received was £l3, the board’s share from the last art union.
It was reported that the new watersoftening plant had been installed, with satisfactory results.
Successful tenders for supplies to Te Puia Hospital and the Waipiro Bay Maternity Home were: Groceries, Oates Bros.; bread, Mr. S. J. Lee; erection of additional sleeping quarters for nurses, Mr. F. Thompson, the price for this being £240. The matron, Miss I. Cornish, acknowledged the donation of books from flic Hiruliarama Junior Red Cross Circle.
