WOMEN’S GOLF TITLE
WELLINGTON FINAL MISS HELEAN BRILLIANT (l’cr Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day.* Playing as brilliant golf as has been seen in New Zealand since the British team’s visit in 1935, Miss Patricia Helean, Hastings, won the Wellington women’s provincial championship yesterday afternoon by defeating Miss Claire Smith, the 23-year-old Invercargill champion, 4 and 3, in the final. Out in 37 to her opponent’s 40, the Hastings player was 2 up at the turn. She drew to 3 up with a four to five at the eleventh, and was 4 up with a birdie 4 at the twelfth. Miss Smith won the thirteenth in five to six, but Miss Helean drew 4 up again by sinking a 12ft. putt for three on the fourteenth green. Miss Smith had the advantage off the fifteenth tee, but Miss Helean took the championship by sinking a 10ft. putt for a half in three. Miss Helean took 24 for the six holes played on the homeward journey to 27 by Miss Smith.
