WRECKED BOAT WAS LAUNCHED THIS MONTH AT AUCKLAND

WELLINGTON, This Day (P.A.). —A preliminary marine inquiry into the disaster to the launch Ranui, near North Rock, off Tauranga, is to be held by the Superintendent of Marine at Tauranga, the Marine Secretary, Mr W. C. Smith, announced today. Whether a magisterial court of inquiry will be held would depend upon the decision of the Minister of Marine, Mr Goosman, to whom a report would be referred, he said.

Mr Smith said the Ranui was registered to carry 140 people within the river limits and 72 people in the extended river limits. The Ranui was launched from the Auckland yards of'Lidgard and Company on December 7 of this year, for Mr E. G. Williams, according to the> Marine Department files. She was 43 feet long and had a 13ft Bin beam. Built of wood, ’ the launch was powered by a 63 h.p. engine.
