Notifiable Diseases

Three deaths from tuberculosistwo in the Christchurch area and one in the Greymouth area—occurred in the Christchurch-Greymouth Health District last week, according to the Department of Health’s weekly return. Five cases of scarlet fever and two of tuberculosis were reported in. Christchurch and one case of tuberculosis was reported from Greymouth. N.Z. Defence Fund

The Minister of Defence, Mr T. L. Macdonald, in a telephone interview at Riverton today, said he could not elaborate on the reported statement by Mr Holland that New Zealand intended to use £80,000,000 of the London reserves as a national defence fund, as he had not been present at the Cabinet meeting. The statement was contained in a broadcast last evening from.’ the New Zealand national stations. 350 Model Planes

Perfect flying models of Tiger Moths, Mustangs, and other wellknown “masters of the sky” have arrived in Christchurch for the 1951 New Zealand national model aeroplane championships, which were to open at Yaldhurst and English Park today if the weather permitted. . More than 100 owners have brought along about 350 flying entries. No less than 146 miles an hour is the New Zealand record for the little speed models. Their engines take a special fluid mixture of alcohol and castrol. These engines run at 18,000 revolutions a minute and weigh 13oz. The size of the gliders varies greatly, but their record flying time is 20 minutes.— (P.A.)

Softball Championships Though the national men’s softball championships have had to be cancelled, arrangements have now been completed with the national executive of the Softball Association for a South Island tournament to be held in Dunedin, starting on January 8. This has been arranged so that there will be some competition for those clubs which had intended to come to Dunedin for the national inter-club championships. A North Island tournament is also being arranged and the winners of the contests in each island will meet later for the national title. —(P.A.)
