MILFORD SOUND EXPERIENCING FOOD SHORTAGE

GORE, This Day (P.A.)— Milford Sound, New Zealand’s most isolated tourist resort, will suffer a severe shortage of fresh fruit and vegetables over the holiday period as a result of the railway strike. This week only token supplies have got through to the fiordland and the prospects for the future, while the railway strike lasts, are not bright. A Gore produce merchant, who handles most of the fresh supplies for Milford Sound, stated this morning that last week, before the strike began, he forwarded four tons of fresh fruit and vegetables to the fiordland area, but this week with a larger number of people in residence, he has been able to forward only four hundredweight to, the district by devious means. The well-known tourist resort, therefore, would have to lean heavily on reserves of tinned fruit and vegetables while the shortage existed. Naturally, with the strike, there have been many cancellations of bookings for the Milford track from the north, but Southland and Otago people, with their own means , of transport, have continued to patronise the resort freely. However, it is expected that cancellations will be heavier nex:t week if the strike continues.
