SPORTING LOGAN’S EAST WIN IN WAIMATE CUP

[SPECIAL TO STAR]

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.-—Margaret Logan and Spring Fancy, both of'whom wofi comfortably, returned the short-priced double dividend of £l2 Os 6d at the Waimate Trotting Club’s inaugural meeting bn Saturday. Margaret Logan won the Waimate Cup with plenty in reserve, but her task was made easier when several of the runners, including the favourite, Imperial Globe, struck trouble during the running. Spring Fancy outclassed her field in the Kiwi . Handicap, but there was a closer finish in the Roi I’Or Handicap, which Nature Girl won from the unlucky Final Return. The Templeton trainer, W. R. Butt, drove three winners for the day.

Diamed, Hillsborough, El Supremo and Trustydale made the early running in the Waimate Cup but there was an upset at the end of four furlongs, El Supremo, who was well placed, breaking and interfering with Monty Jason and Ben Ledi, who in turn settled the chances of several other runners. This left Diamed, Hillsborough, Trustydale and Margaret Logan the best-placed horses, but just past the mile Trustydale broke, Green Spear colliding with him. Green Spear lost his driver and several of the • field had to be almost pulled up to dodge trouble. Imperial Globe, the favourite, had been put out of the contest early, breaking a hopple in the first furlong. Diamed carried on in front, but once J. G. Hampton asked Margaret Logan for her best she soon reached the front to win by three lengths from Diamed, with Officious finishing on well six lengths away, ahead of Kingsley, Hillsborough and Secundus.

Led All Way

Spring Fancy had an all-the-way win in the Kiwi Handicap, . winning convincingly from Calm Sailing and Servicemen, both of which had every chance. Calm Sailing followed the winner throughout but was well beaten for pace over the last furlong, although he held on well to beat Servicemen for second placing.

Nature Girl gave W. R. Butt his third win for the day in the Roi I’Or Handicap, after reaching the lead with six furlongs to cover, his nearest attendants then being Kingsley, Fleethoof, Final Return and El Supremo. Nature Girl stayed on well to beat the strong-finishing Final Return by

half-a-length, and El Supremo came home better than anything in third place. The totalisator investments amounted to £27,041 10s, including £2046 10s on the doubles totalisator.
