REEFTON MINING STUDENTS SUCCESSFUL IN EXAMINATIONS
REEFTON, This Day (O.C.)— The Director, Mr W. J. Bolitho, reported at the December meeting of the council of the Reefton School of Mines that at the annual examinations for underviewers and deputies for coal mines, the first list of passes included the following pupils of the school. , , . _ u nderviewers’ examination: — Mr E. J. Riley, Reei'ton (partial pass). Deputies’ certificates: —Messrs J.
Cooper. A. Watson. W. Gilmour (all of Reeftun): E. Collins and E. White (both of Dobson), : ''(l lull pass.
Electricians' certificate: — Messrs M. Saunders and G. Hunter (<>f Reefton) compietccl '!he examination. For the month, eeven mineral tests were made in the laboratory. These were five alluvial samples and one each coal dust and quartz. Three mineral specimens from Marlborough also came forward for identification.
Correspondence covering the new regulations for coal mines examinations was read by the director, whose action in replying to the Board of Examiners on the matter of firefighting experience for school students was endorsed. The director was empowered to arrange . for the usual Christmas ■holidays. Mr J. B. Auld presided at the meeting. Messrs R. Alborn, G. Richards, K. Patterson, F, W. Archer, C. Lawn, J, Crossman, J. W. Lundon and the director were also present. The chairman extended the season’s .greeting to the council and director and said that the school had experienced a busy but difficult year. PERSONAL Messrs Brazil and E. Kerry, both pupils of Reefton School of Mines who have been in Wellington for oral tests for the first class coal mine managers’ examination have both obtained a partial pass. Mr and Mrs R. G. Lawn and Mr J. Lawn have been visiting Reefton. Miss C. Osborne, Wellington, is spending a short holiday with her mother, Mrs J. W. Osborne, Reefton. Miss L. Panckhurst has returned to Reefton for the University vacation. BAND PROGRAMME On Friday evening the Inangahua Silver Band played an enjoyable programme which marked the commencement of the band’s Christmas schedule. The band will again carry out the usual programme of carol playing at Christmas.
