PACIFIST BISHOP OPPOSES BRITISH REARMAMENT

LONDON, Dec 10 (Rec 10 a.m.).— If Britain turned from war preparations other peoples would sooner or later follow her example, said Pr Barnes, Bishop of Birmingham, today when dedicating a war memorial to old boys of a Birmingham school. Dr Barnes, who said he was a pacifist, doubted whether the true patriot should always be ready for war. “The greatest man I ever met was Gandhi. He was a great statesman. He won independence for India and set war aside in the belief that without it his country could win freedom. He pointed the way through peace to freedom which I am sure mankind must follow,” said Dr Barnes.
