PRICE OF BREAD IN AUSTRALIA WILL BE RAISED

SYDNEY, This Day (Rec. 1 p.m.). —The Federal Government has decided to pay growers 9d per bushel more for wheat used in Australia and withdraw its present subsidy of 5d per bushel. This means that the price to millers will rise from 6s 8d to 7s lOd per bushel. Increases in the retail prices of both flour and bread are expected to follow. One Sydney expert says the rise is equivalent to an increase of a halfpenny on a 21b loaf, which is now 7>d over the counter and 8d delivered. Announcing the wheat price increase in Canberra, the Minister of Commerce and Agriculture, Mr J. McEwen, said the rise was not out of proportion to the increases in other industries. It should not be overlooked that the stabilisation plan provided Australia with 60,000,000 bushels of wheat at half the world export price, which meant that Australian consumers were saved £24,000,000.
