RUGBY LEAGUE Photographs Presented To N.Z. Schoolboy Players
In accordance with the West Coast Rugby League’s custom of presenting a framed photograph to each West Coast schoolboy gaining New Zealand honours, and also to the school which the boy attended, Mr C. Mcßride today will make a presentation on behalf of the league to W. Meadowcroft, a pupil of the Blackball School. In each photograph Meadow.croft, a New Zealand representative last season, is wearing the New Zealand jersey. Other West Coast boys to have gained a New Zealand cap in recent seasons are K. Russell (Kohinoor), R. Houston (Blackball), and P. Ward (Marist). Photographs were presented to Ward and the Marist School by the West Coast Rugby League last week. Mr W. Meates, president of the league, in making the presentation to the school, referred to the record of the school in sport. He said that many former pupils had gained provincial and international honours. T. R. O’Callaghan and W. A. Meates had been New Zealand Rugby representatives, C. Mcßride was recognised as one of the leading Rugby League forwards in the world, L. O’Neill had upheld West Coast’s sporting record at the Australian and New Zealand boxing championships, and O. Morris had been selected in the Minor Associations’ cricket team to tour Fiji, but had been unable to make the trip. The head prefect, P. O’Farrell, received the portrait of Ward on behalf of the school. Mr P. Sweetman also represented the Rugby League Board of Control at the function.
The Rev. Brother Maurice made the presentation to Ward.
