CRICKET Australia Out For 228: M.C.C. Bowlers On Top

BRISBANE, December I.—Dismissing a strong Australian side for 2.28, the touring English cricket team surprised its most optimistic supporters and more than offset Australia’s advantage of having first use. of a batsman’s wicket when the first test began at Brisbane today. It was an unexpected but thoroughly earned success and one which will add interest to the matches and to the series.

England’s pace bowlers, T. _E. Bailey and A. V. Eedser, both bowled finely, but D. V. P. Wright and F. IL Brown also did excellent work. Easily the best Australian innings was played by R. N. Harvey, who made a dashing 74. It was an absorbing and sometimes thrilling day’s cricket. Australia lost one of its opening batsmen, J. Moroney, before a run iiad been scored, and for the rest of the day the English bowlers were usually on top, and they were supported by excellent fielding. Brown made the first change at 15, Wright replacing Bailey, whose four overs had cost 14 runs. Harvey,■ when 14, had a narrow escape, dropping his bat about an inch cape, dropping his bat about an inch from the wicket after Bcdscr had hit him on the glove. The 50 was posted in 72 minutes. At luncheon the score was 67 (Harvey 41, Morris 24).

Morris went leg before wicket in Bcdser’s first over after lunch. At 116 Wright turned one back sharply from the oil', which Miller pushed up to A. J. Mclntyre al midon. Two runs later Harvey was magmcoidly caught on the- leg side by Evans oil IJedscr. Harvey balled l.'G minules and hit 10 fours. When S. J. Loxton joined A. L. Hassett four wickets iiad fallen for 118 runs. A further sensation followed when at 129 Bcdscr swung one late and hit Hassett’s olf slump. Bedser had then taken three for 34 off 12 overs.

Loxioii mid fl. Ijindw.'iTi hod exciting experiences. Lux ton skied Wright over the heads of I he slips, but brought up 150 wdii a four from Bed-

ser. Just before the tea interval Brown bowled a quicker one than .usual, and Evans, snapping up a snick dismissed Loxton. The score at tea was 166 for six wickets. Scores:—
