“CHRISTMAS” SHIPS FOR GREYMOUTH FROM NORTH ISLAND
The last' consignment of general cargo for Greymouth before Christmas are expected to leave North Island ports next week. The “Christmas” ships will be the Omana, which is expected to leave Auckland on Thursday, and the Kartigi, which is now expected to leave Wellington on Wednesday. The Kartigi has been delayed a day because of high winds at Wellington, which have also delayed until Monday the departure of the collier, Kiwitea, which had been scheduled to leave there yesterday. Meanwhile there has been a delay to shipping at Greymouth, the. Kaitangata and the Rata having been m the roadstead for a day due to unfavourable conditions in the Grey river. Heavy rain brought a seven-knot fresh in the river yesterday, but this had fallen this morning to five knots. It was expected that the two ships would be able to enter port on this afternoon’s tide. The fresh in the Grey river is expected to have a beneficial effect by scouring the bar, the depth on which had been reduced considerably in recent weeks. However, the harbourmaster, Captain H. Moar, pointed out this morning that another effect would probably be the shoaling of the berthages at the wharf.
