TEN DEATHS IN FIRE IN BIG DEPARTMENT STORE
HALIFAX (Nova Scotia), Dec. 1 (Rec. 11.30 a.m.). —Ten Christmas shoppers and shop assistants died yesterday in a fire which swept a four-storey department store shortly before closing time. ' . The fire began . when a window dresser was putting the finishing touches to an electrical Christmas greeting. The display suddenly burst into flames, which spread rapidly into the store.- , / Most of the people in the shop got out safely before the fire blocked off the main entrance but some were caught on top floors. Firemen were hindered by an explosion of the store’s oil storage tank, which blew glass from windows out over the street. It took the fireme® six hours to quell the blaze. A fire officer said the store had no rear door and no sprinkler system.
