PRISONER REMANDED IN COURT TODAY

CHRISTCHURCH, This ' Day (P.A.). —Cecil Robert Gurr Otto, the escaped murderer who was captured in the Lewis Pass yesterday appeared today in the Magistrate’s Court on a charge that, on November 12, having been convicted at Hamilton on February 1, 1949, of murder, he escaped from lawful custody. Otto required assistance to enter the dock. The wound to his face, where he shot himself stood out vividly. The clothes which Otto was wearing were those in which he was brought from Maruia Springs last night. He had on grey flannel trousers and an old army jersey. Underneath the jersey he wore a pyjamacoat. He seemed weak. After the charge had been read, Sub-Inspector .A. Johnston said: “This man was arrested last night on the West Coast and arrived in Christchurch late last evening. I would ask for a remand until Friday, December 8.” The remand was granted and Otto quickly left the dock. The only members of the public present in the court were two young women and a man. ■
