BLACKBALL LEAGUE TEAM LEFT TODAY FOR AUCKLAND

With the object of playing a match against the Auckland champion side, Mt Albert, at Carlaw Park on Saturday, the ’ Blackball senior Rugby League team left today for Auckland. The party numbered 25. It will be Blackball’s third attempt to secure New Zealand club supremacy. Throughout the years many sporting laurels have been won for the township and the code and it would be fitting to see this further success added to the club’s fine record. Previously, in 1943, Blackball defeated Canterbury’s champions (Syd-enham-Rakaia) 43-6, Huntly 21-2 and Petone 30-5. They then journeyed to Auckland and in a memorable fixture went under to Manakau 22-9. Again in 1946 Blackball played Richmond at Wingham Park and lost by 8 points to nil. This year’s side includes a large number of young players. . Steady improvement has been maintained throughout the season and the teams last two performances against Brunner and Sydenham, were particularly impressive. The team is managed by Messrs J. McNaughton and J. Walker secretary and president of the club whilst Mr J. Dodds is coach. The team, on its departure, bore an impressive appearance. The players being dressed in the club’s newly adopted blazers and grey trousers. The monogram for the blazers has attracted a lot of attention, being specially designed for,the club.
