AUCKLAND HOSPITAL CONCERNED: SMALL INTAKE OF TRAINEES

AUCKLAND, October 2 (P.A.).— The Auckland Hospital Board is concerned at the marked decrease shown in the intake of pupil nurses for training at its institutions during the current year and at the smallness of the numbers offering for training in 1951. The board decided tonight to advise the Minister of Health (Mr J. T. Watts), the Director-General of Health (Dr J. Cairney), and the Hospital Boards’ Association of New Zealand that the national advertising campaign had failed in its objective, mainly through the infrequency of its advertising in the Auckland area. Because the small classes registering for 1951 have made the matter one of urgency, application will be made to the Minister of Health for immediate approval of the board spending a sufficient sum to obtain an adequate number of trainees. The Minister will be advised that the position has deteriorated considerably since the board was forced to relinquish its own publicity and recruitment campaign for pupil nursing staff. The board will also say that the present additional allocation of £1 a 1000 of population is totally inadequate for its efforts in campaigning for the essential staffing of institutions serving a district population of nearly 40Q,000 people.
