Appeal Ends
Greymouth’s response to the united Nations’ appeal for children was considerably less than half of the quota set the town. The appeal, which ended on Saturday, produced a total of £1206, which is £1989 less than the quota of £3195. The total receipts, however, it is reported, compare favourably with the average response in many other New Zealand centres.
Mines And Transport Although a final decision had not been made when the Evening Star went to press, indications were this afternoon that the Blackball State mine might have a compulsory “holiday” tomorrow, owing to high level of coal stocks and the wagon position. Pending the arrival of the collier Omana, a large number of hoppers are under load and the supply of flat wagons is also limited. All of the; mines are having difficulty in regard to the transport of coal but in the meantime, Blackball is in the most precarious position. Dearer Ice Cream
Ice cream in pint and quart cartons rose in price in Auckland today from Is 41d and 2s 9d to Is 6d and 3s. The main reason for the increase was the high price of pulp board used for the cartons, said an Auckland provincial Ice Cream Manufacturers’ Association representative. This had gone from £BO to £lOO a ton in the past few months, he said. Board from Finland was going to Russia and North America was buying from Scandinavia. Other factors were higher wages and rising material costs. —(P.A.)
