Women’s Institutes

Otira W.I. At the September meeting of the Otira Women’s Institute, Mrs Haines presided’ over a good attendance. There were two guests of the evening, Mrs Barker, ■ president of the West Coast Federation, who spoke on institute procedure, and Mrs Batey, voluntary organiser, who also gave an interesting talk on the duties of the executive officers. Miss Martin, of the Adult Education Branch, was also present. The monthly competitions resulted: Sponge roll, Mrs Bell 1, Mrs Lee 2; apron, Mrs Lee 1, Mrs Haines 2. The motto, “Worry, like a rocking chair, keeps you busy but gets you nowhere,” was given by Mrs Frewin. Mrs Still won the “mystery” parcel. The hostesses’ competition was won by Mesdames Lee and Frewin equal Ist. Mesdames Bell and Shaw were hostesses.

Kaiata W.I. Mrs Cuthbert presided over a good attendance of members at the September meeting of the Kaiata Women’s Institute. The meeting opened with the singing of the institute song and all members read the aspirations. One visitor was welcomed. Mrs Bailey read the motto for the month, “Be glad and your friends are many, be sad and your friends are few.” Mesdames Cuthbert and Coom were appointed delegates to the half-yearly federation meeting. Mrs Faulkner demonstrated floral novelty decorations. Mrs Kenning was the winner of the “mystery” parcel. The roll call was “Gardening hints.” The social half-hour took the form of “Round the' camp fire,” presented by the drama circle. Competition winners were as follows: —Water biscuits: Mrs Worsley 1, Mrs Walsh 2, Mrs Skates 3; bowl of daffodils: Mrs Faulkner 1, Mrs Pascoe 2, Mrs Walsh 3; something new from something old, Mrs Faulkner 1. Hostesses for the evening were Mesdames Skates, Sweetman and Walsh. Ahaura W.I.

The September meeting of Ahaura Women’s Institute was held recently,' there being' a good attendance. It was decided to send two members to Reefton for the half-yearly council meeting in October. The remits were also discussed. Mrs Goodyer gave the month’s motto, “Enjoy life, later may be too late.” The roll call, “My pet aversion,” was well answered. Mrs F. Hahn senr. gave a very interesting talk on the cultivation of dahlias; members gaining some useful hints. The social half hour was spent in guessing the contents of a mystery parcel, Mrs Grant being the winner. Competition winners were: Fancy coat hanger: Mrs Butler; best bloom, Mrs F. Hahn senr. 1. Hostesses for the evening were Mrs Maclean, Mrs Sheedy and Mrs Martin. The Institute held its first birthday party last Saturday. -There was an attendance of 260. The competition for a ten minute item was won by Cobden Women’s Institutes with Kaiata only one point behind, second. The rest of the evening was spent in dancing, Brunner W.I.

The monthly meeting of the Brunner Women’s Institute was held in the Taylorville pavilion on Wednesday last. Mrs Coates presided over a good attendance. Three new members have been nominated. Inyitations from Ahaura, Runanga and Cobden wer§ received and accepted. Birthday. celebration arrangements were made. Three thousand stamps were handed in to be sent to Missions. Mrs

Hill gave an interesting demonstration on articles made from plastic. Competitions resulted as follows:— Jar of flowers, Mrs Stapleton; cocoanut ice, Mrs Gutberlet. Hostesses were Mesdames Coates, Creagh and Bennie. Karoro W.l. The September meeting of the Karoro Women’s Institute was held in the pavilion of the Tasman Bowling Club, Mrs Hazeldine presiding. One new member was proposed. Birthday invitations were received from the Ahaura, Runanga and Cobden Institutes. Mi's R. Reynolds was elected to the vacancy on the committee. The debate “should husbands do the washing” caused much amusement. Mrs Batty and Mrs Dick were appointed sick visitors for the month. Mrs Batty was the winner of the mystery parcel. Mrs Dalziel gave a talk on the group day held recently.. Competition winners were: tray cloth, Mrs Murray 1, Mrs Dalziel, 2 Mesdames Reynolds and Shepherd equal 3; bloom, Mrs Shepherd 1, Mrs Ellis 2, Mrs Fleming 3; vase of spring flowers, Mrs Reynolds 1, Mrs Murray 2, Mrs Dalziel 3; sponge sandwich, Mrs Reynolds 1, Mrs Shepherd 2. Evening meetings will commence with the October meeting.
