HANDLING OF N.Z. POTATOES: WHARF DISPUTE AT SYDNEY

SYDNEY, September 29.—A wharf labourer’s dispute stopped the discharge of much-needed New Zealand potatoes from the steamer Stonegate today, a few hours after she had arrived at Sydney.

As a result of the dispute, 100 wharf labourers were suspended.

Men trucking in a wharf shed at Darling Harbour were carrying two bags of potatoes on each hand-truck. They complained that the New Zealand bags were heavier, and bigger than Australian bags. The stevedores ordered the men to carry the customary three bags, and when they refused, four or five gangs were suspended.
