Groundnut Plantings To Be Reduced

LONDON, Sept. 29.—The British Overseas Food Corporation has decided to adopt the recommendation of a group of experts, and to reduce groundnut plantings at Kongwa, Tanganyika, one of the scheme’s biggest centres. • The experts advised that further work on plans drawn up last year would be ill-advised. They urged that only 12,000 acres should be cropped in each of the next three years, instead of 80,650 acres as planned originally. The experts’ report revealed that £600,000 was needed to produce crops worth £lOO,OOO. This was in round figures, and without allowance for overheads.

Eighty-five per cent, of the loss resulted from the failure of sunflower seeds planted to increase the oilbearing crops. The battle to produce edible oils from nuts has been fought in the face of bad weather and lack of machinery. The scheme has been under constant criticism from the Conservative Opposition in the House of Commons.
