U.S. Industrial Activity
The United States’ vast industrial machine, expanding rapidly to meet defence needs, has climbed to its highest level of activity in five years. The Federal Reserve Board placed industrial production in August at 207 per.cent, of the '1935-39 average —the highest mark since 1945. A further rise of about 5 per cent, is expected for September. The Labour Department said that 1,541,000 workers had new jobs in August, also the highest figure for five years—Washington, Sept. 28.
Powerful New Telescope A Baker-Schmidt telescope, the first of its kind ever made, was loaded today for shipment to South Africa. It is claimed, that the new telescope will penetrate 30,000 light years into the Milky Way, which is estimated” to be three times the depth previously recorded. The telescope is for use at Harvard University’s Borden station at Bloemfontein-. The University of Armagh, in Northern Ireland, and Dunsink Observatory, in Eire, co-operate in the running of the Borden station.—New York, September 28.
