BADMINTON ST JOHN’S LOSE BENNINGTON CUP TO BLAKETOWN
In the first badminton challenge match of the season for the Bennington Cup, the holders, St John’s, were defeated by the challengers, Blaketown, by a margin of nine points. The game score was even, six all, and the issue was decided by the total match .
points, 205 to 196. The tournament was keenly contested throughout. St John’s won all the men’s doubles and Blaketown won the three women’s doubles. It was the mixed doubles that decided the result.
These six matches were so evenly contested that the decision rested with the last match. In an exciting game T. Jarvis and M. Oakley, of Blaketown, defeated Mrs Fraser and W. Bone, of St John’s, 21-13. Results were (St John’s players mentioned first): —- Men’s Doubles. — Tennent and Stocker 21 v Rudd and D. Spender 2; Blyth and Saunders 21 v J. Benyon and D. Cairney 20; Seator and Bone 21 v G. Collins and T. Jarvis 6. Women’s Doubles—Mrs Hutchison and’Mrs Buchanan 8, v N. Longstaff and M. Knapp 21; Mrs Tennent and Mrs Stocker 12, v J. de Goldi and I. Finlay 21; Mrs Seator and Mrs Fraser 10 v U. Clarke and M. Oakley 21. Combined Doubles.—Mrs Tennent and Tennent 21 v Rudd and N. Longstaff 19; Mrs Stocker and Stocker 21 v D. Spender and M. Knapp 17; Mrs Hutchison and Blyth 21, J. Benyon and J. de Goldi 15; Mrs Buchanan and Saunders 20 v G. Collins and I. Finlay 21; Mrs Seator and Seator 7, v D. Cairney and U.
