UNION FUNDS: COMMENT ON GOVERNMENT BILL
WELLINGTON, This Day (P.A.)— “I am amazed that the Prime Minister has not allowed a Bill directly affecting the trade unions to go before the Labour Bills Committee so that the unions concerned might have the opportunity of giving evidence about it,” said Mr A. W. Croskery, president of the New 'Zealand Federation of Labour, today. Mr Croskery said he. considered the Political Disabilities Removal Amendment Bill of sufficient importance for him to call a special meeting of the federation’s national executive to discuss it. This meeting would probably be held on Wednesday. “I have not yet had an opportunity of seeing the bill as tabled in
the House, but it seems to be a most peculiar position that a local body can declare carried a poll to borrow money, when perhaps not 10 per cent of the ratepayers have voted, while in this case those who have not voted will be counted against the proposal,” said Mr Croskery, The bill provides that any resolution for the application of union funds to political purposes must be passed by a majority of all members of the union, rather than by a majority of the votes cast in a ballot.)
