RUGBY LEAGUE AND AMATEURISM IN N.Z.
WELLINGTON, This Day (P.A.)—A ruling about the amateur status of Rugby League players was given last night by the N.Z.A.A.A. management committee. It followed a request from the Auckland Athletic Centre, which referred in particular to B. Hough, Empire Games representative, who. scored three tries against Wellington in a Rugby League match last Saturday. . , ;rrl ~ The text of the ruling is: To the extent that League football is amateur, this association does not wish to prejudice players who are strictly amateur, but if any monetary prize is offered, any winning team and any member of that team receives a monetary or equivalent benefit,’ then all members of such team forfeit their amateur status. Auckland is to be asked whether members of the team, received & monetary reward.
