GOLF New Records In British Open Championship
LONDON, July 3.—Records toppled in a remarkable day’s golf when the first qualifying round for the British Open golf championship was played at the Old Troon and Loch Green courses at Ayrshire today. Flory Van Donck, 38-year-old Belgian professional, turned on an astonishing 65—a new record for the Old Troon course and equal to Henry Cotton’s 1934 record for the lowest championship round ever achieved.in the Open. Scores: Van Donck, 65; Locke, Ward 68; Pickworth, 69; Cerda, Von Nida, AV. Smithers, G. Griffiths, H. Adams, K. Bousfield, J. Bulla, F. Daly, 70; S. King, E. Brown, N. Sutton, R. Mason, R. Whitcombe 71; J. Adams, H. Thomson, A. Padgham, R. MacGregor, 72; J. Wiggett, A. Thirwell, B. McMillan, T. O. Fairbairn, G. White, 73; W. Forrester, A. Robertson, J. McHale, K. Hassan, A. Lees, F. Stranahan Dai Rees, 74. . i One hundred players will qualify for the 72 holes championship proper, and of those 40 will play in the 36 holes final.
