PRESENTATION OF KING’S CERTIFICATE TO GLADSTONE SCOUT
The presentation of a King Scout certificate, which bears the signature of His Majesty, the King, to Troop Leader G. Hughes, of Gladstone, was made at a recent Scout gathering at Gladstone. Visiting officers included: County Commissioner H. Russell, District Scoutmaster J. Knight and the local association secretary, Mr G. C. Greer.
The evening commenced with a Dominion haka in honour of the county commissioner after which all scouts assembled for inspection. Displays of jungle dancing, first aid treatment, and semaphore signalling were later given by scouts and cubs. In presenting the King Scout certificate the county commissioner spoke highly of the work carried out by Troop-leader Hughes and expressed the wish that after attaining the highest of all scouting awards, he would continue to take an active interest in scouting for many years to come. Mr Russell, also spoke on the high ideals of scouting and gave an interesting account of scouting as carried out in early days. In conclusion he commented on the high standard of efficiency of scoutmaster W, Teague and cubmaster C. Duncan of the Gladstone troop. A vocal item was given by Cub Naylor, all scouts joining in the chorus. Supper was provided by the women of the district. The evening concluded with the lowering of the flag and “taps.” '
