MAN PENALISED FOR REFUSAL TO JOIN A UNION

DUNEDIN, This Di>X (P.A.).-/'! have never been a member of a union in my life and I have no intention of joining compulsory unionism how,’ stated Rewi Joseph Shiel, a driver o£ a mechanical shovel, in the Magistrate’s Court this morning when the inspector of awards proceeded against, him for a breach of the New Zealand Motor and Horse Drivers’ Union award. The inspector asked for a £5 penalty, which was allowed by Mr J. G. Warrington S.M. > “If I am forced to join the union, I would rather leave my job. If I do leave, it will be bad for the building trade, v My employer would not be able to get a man to replace rrie, as you can’t get men to work in a quarry,” Shiel said. Mr P. Pelvin, who appeared for the inspector, said Shiel had refused to become a member of the Drivers Union, although he came within the scope of the union’s award. “Whatever may be the view of the worker on the question of compulsory unionism, the law makes it incumbent on him to join a union,” said Mr. Warrington, in giving judgment for the department.
