WALLSEND MINE AGAIN IDLE: REPAIR OF ROPE

The Wallsend State mine was idle again today, as a result of the union’s insistence that the repaired main haulage rope,in the workings, as distinct from the access shaft, sriould be passed aS safe by a 'competent authority.'' /■; ■ •• a ■ The rope broke on Friday afternoon and was spliced during the_week-end. Yesterday morning, the union made a request that its check inspectors should inspect the rope before work was commenced. By the time the check inspectors had seen the rope it was' after. 9 o’clock and the men had returned home. - ■ This morning, the condition of the rope was again discussed by the union, after the men had assembled for work and, it is understood, the check inspectors expressed trie opinion that they were really not competent to express an opinion as to the safety of the spliced rope. j- . The union then made ah official reqiiest that the rope should be inspected by an inspector of mines before work was resumed and, pending this inspection, the men returned home. An inspector was not immediately available but it is likely that the desired inspection will be made sometime today.

Idle Days At Huntly

District Mines

AUCKLAND, This Day (P.A.).— No work is being done at the MacDonald mine, Huntly, today. The men held a stopwork meeting until 10.20 and then returned home. They discussed union business and received the Coal Council’s report. The Pukemiro and Alison miners, who were idle yesterday, worked the normal hours today. The Rotowaro workers met at the mine for an hour before starting today. .
