TABLE TENNIS FOURTH ROUND GAMES COMPLETED: TWO UNITED TEAMS LEAD
At the end of the fourth round of match play the Greymquth Table Tennis Sub-association competitions are at an interesting stage. In the A grade, United 1 and United 2 are in the lead, each team having suffered only one defeat. Last week United 1 were surprisingly beaten by loco, 21-19, after an exciting match. This was Loco’s first win of the season, and these four players M. McGeady, L. Turner, L. N. Downes and D. Hall should keep their club well to the fore from now on. United 2 suffered its defeat at the hands of United 1. The older players, led by R. Harris, West Coast champion, were too experienced for their'much younger opponents. Since then United 2 have beaten Grey Tennis, last year’s winners'. The only player in that team to be able to cope at all well with the strong attack was J. Luey, the Greymouth singles champion last year. Luey won all his singles matches, J. Lynch and K. Tabb giving him the closest games.
Lynch is - now on top of the United Club ladder, having beaten R. Harris in two challenge games recently. He should not take long to get well up on the Greymouth ladder. Cobden, Marist and Blaketown teams have all been playing well, but would need to show improvement tp win - out as the champion team.
In the B grade competition, Cobden 1, Blaketown 1 and United 2 all remain unbeaten. When these teams meet later in the competition some very good matches should result. The results of the fourth round were:—
A Grader United 2 beat Grey Tennis 21-19; Loco beat United 1 21-19. Cobden beat Marist 24-16; Blaketown beat Rapahoe by default.
B Grade: Cobden 1 beat Cobden 2 23-17; Blaketown 2 beat United 1, 26-14; Loco beat Grey Central 29-11; Cobden 3 beat Grey Tennis 25-15; United 2 beat Rapahoe 31-9.
