POWER SUPPLY CUT MAY BE NECESSARY
CHRISTCHURCH, This Day (P-A-). Severe power restrictions will be reintroduced, unless the South Island * demand is reduced to the 1949 levei. Cold weather and the non-observ-ance of the existing restrictions have sent the demand soaring. Pointing the way are these facts: More than 3,000,000 units were drawn from storage in the past week. There was a record system demand of 185,652 kilowatts on Wednesday. The lake levels have fallen steadilv since the boost they received in the May 27 week-end storm. Yesterday . at- a conference in Christchurch of the South Island power supply authority engineers, the district engineer of the State Hydro-Electric Department (Mr W. H. Gregory) issued a warning that the authorities must stay within their quotas. He emphasised that consumption could not go on at the present rate without further restrictions', and' he appealed to the authorities to get their demand down to the 1949 level.
